Hydrochloric acid is a strong inorganic acid, with pungent odour and very corrosive. Pure hydrochloric acid is completely colorless, while the commercial is yellowish because it contains iron salts impurities. Hydrochloric acid reacts with bases, various organic compounds and dissolves all the metals that are more electropositive from hydrogen.

One major application of hydrochloric acid in wastewater treatment is to neutralize the alkalinity of the effluent. It is widely used in the chemical industry as raw material for the manufacture of many commercial products. Also it is used in many other cases, such as for metal etching, for pickling and for surface cleaning, for regeneration of ion exchange resins, to produce gelatine and in leather processing etc.
