The aerobic chloride has a light green colour with a characteristic odour that is the same as that of solution chlorine used in household cleaning. It is mainly used for disinfection (destruction of pathogens) in wastewater or drinking water to prevent the spread of diseases in water. The aerobic chloride must be transported and handled with particular attention, taking into account all the necessary preventive and safety measures. One should know that it is a strong acidic medium, reacts with metals, in the presence of humidity becomes a strong corrosive, causes inflammation to skin and the muciferous glands and is very toxic (poisonous) even in a small dose.
It dissolves enough in water (1% wt in 10οC) and reacts oxidatively, with both inorganic (Fe2+, Mn2+, NO2–, H2S) and with organic substances, which bind the “required chlorine.” After fulfilling the requirement of water to chlorine it remains a “residual” active chlorine ~ 0,2ppm to react as a disinfectant in case of contamination of water by pathogens in the network.
The chlorine gas is applied :
– In prechlorination of raw water for production of drinking water.
– In control hydrogen sulfide and odors.
– The surge control of activated sludge.
